Sunday Songs: Bonnie Raitt/Jefferson Starship

As most people are, I'm strongly affected by music.  My husband and I are always joking around about why a particular song makes us feel a particular way or the context in which we usually heard it and generally these are a bit unexpected.  I've decided to commemorate some of my favorite happy/sad songs here.  I hope you enjoy!

SAD: Bonnie Raitt- "I Can't Make You Love Me"

Maybe I shouldn't start with what I feel is the saddest song ever, but here we go.  Other than the obvious reasons, I feel this song is especially melancholy because it always used to wake me up on my alarm clock radio at 6 am when it was still dark outside (in middle school).  Don't get me wrong, I love this song, but there is definitely something about it that makes it seem like it should be playing at an empty small town diner that is about to close forever as the sun goes down.

HAPPY: Jefferson Starship- "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now"

Since I started off the sad section with my saddest song of all, I had to combine it with my happiest!  Get excited!  This song was love at first listen to my young ears.  After watching "Mannequin 2: On the Move" every day all summer long in elementary school, this song was a part of my daily life.  "Whooo, Kristy Swanson got away from the evil Count Spritzel with that guy from Howard's Head!"  This is one of the only songs that I even sing along with the guitar solo...unfortunately for anyone nearby.

"BERMUDA!" (If any fellow "Mannequin 2" lovers are out there like my husband's Uncle Kevin, then you know why I just had to say it.)

  1. Bonnie Raitt must be impossibly strong just to get through this song.
